i regret to inform all of my clients, friends and supporters that the IDTANA in conjunction with the NAFC and An Coimisiun have announced a new rule, effective immediately, which in part states:
"In consideration of safety and in fairness to dancers performing at a Feis, photography of any kind which has the capability of capturing a dancer's image while in motion is strictly forbidden.
A Feis may elect to allow in motion photography for publicity purposes, but the pictures are considered the sole property of the Feis and solely for Feis use only; they are not to be used for personal gain through commercial use or sale, and under no circumstances can they be published on any website or other areas, without the express written permission of the persons involved." (the entire ruling may be viewed at www.idtana.org/)
This ruling will end Rince Pix as it now exists. As a business owner I am, of course, devastated but as a parent I'm upset on an even deeper level. So many of you have written over the years to express just how much the photos I've captured of your dancers mean to you and your families, which is exactly why I founded Rince Pix. Irish Dancing already has so many rules that govern a parent's ability to capture their child's memories, and now the one way that was left for you to legitimately have memories of your child actually dancing in competition, has been eliminated. As a parent I'm deeply disappointed.
It has been my steadfast opinion that the opportunity to have your dancer photographed in action should not be reserved for the small percentage of North American dancers who will make it to the Worlds or All Ireland stage. Every dancer who dons a pair of soft shoes and learns their 'sevens' should be given the same opportunity to have their moments on stage captured, whether their dancing career is to last just months or to go on for years to come. This is the very foundation of Rince Pix.
It has always been my goal to represent the Irish Dancing community in the most positive way possible, to show the beauty of the artform, to capture the excitement, the friendships, and the special family moments that exist at Irish Dancing events. With the banning of even 'Authorized' action photography a key ingredient of that recipe is gone.
I am now considering how to move Rince Pix forward from this point. I truly appreciate the messages of support and encouragement from those who have already contacted me. It is that feedback that confirms for me the value of the service I offered, and that this ruling is a step backward for Irish Dance families in North America. I will reply to all messages, but if you could allow a little more time than normal for me to do so I would appreciate it.
Warm regards,
Stephanie Martin
